Don Evans and his son Sam, from July 23 to July 28, participated in the 260 mile StarTribune MSTram Bike Tour. This bicycle event was a benefit for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Minnesota Chapter. The route took the riders, not racers, in the SE Minnesota and SW area of Wisconsin from La Crescent to Dakota County Technical College.
Their first day was a 49 mile ride from La Crescent to Lanesboro and on the second day they covered 52.3 miles from Lanesboro to Winona. On the third day they peddled 66.8 miles from Winona to Wabasha and they covered 57.5 miles on the fourth day going from Wabash to River Falls. On the fifth and final day the riders biked from River Falls to the Dakota County Technical College for a total of 260 miles; Don and Sam actually traveled 262 miles total.
Don’s decision to do the ride came rather suddenly, his son Sam had signed up for the ride earlier with three friends. Two of these friends were unable to participate at the last minute so Don stepped up to the plate or up to the peddles as it were and took on the challenge. Don says of the ride, “The extreme heat added to the challenge of the ride but the beauty of the area as well as the feeling of accomplishment made it well worth the pain.”
The Evan’s have a close family friend that struggles with MS and Don was very happy and willing to help fund research by participating in the ride. One of Don’s employees, Kathy, also has a daughter who has recently been diagnosed with the disease and she is very grateful for the many people who are ready and willing to give of their time and energies to helping others.
