As our life styles change and additional forms of recreation become popular the items used for recreation seem to be more valuable and as such the need for insurance coverage has increased.
In most cases anything that has a license or a DNR (Department of Natural Resources) permit will need its own separate insurance coverage for physical damage as well as the potential liability exposure that it might have.
Recreational Vehicles include (but not limited to) the following items:

- Motorcycles
- Boats
- Snowmobiles
- Moto-cross bikes/trail bikes
- Motorhomes
- Travel Trailers
- Personal Watercraft (sometimes referred to as jet-skis)
- ATV's (All Terrain Vehicles) sometimes used for trail rides or hunting
The following discounts may be available depending upon the company providing the coverage as well as the type of unit being insured.
- Clean driving records
- Limited horsepower
- Multi-units discounts
- Safety course completion credits
- Fire extinguishers, fire suppression devices
- Supporting coverage discounts
Coverage forms available for Recreational Vehicles.
- In some cases the units can be added as an endorsement to a homeowners policy with coverage for liability as well as damage to the unit (physical damage coverage) being reasonably priced. It is however extremely important to have both coverages endorsed to the homeowners policy so that no voids in coverage occur. Mortgage loan companies sometimes object to this type of coverage especially if they are paying the homeowners insurance policy through and escrow account.
- Individual policies can be provided and coverages similar to those included on an automobile policy can be included for the recreational vehicle. Some of the more popular coverages typically included on a recreational vehicle policy include:
- Liability coverage
- Physical damage coverage
- Medical payments coverage
- Un/Under Insured Motorists coverage
- Special assessory or custom equipment coverage
- Other optional coverages applicable to the specific unit to be insured
SPECIAL COVERAGES WE WOULD SUGGEST:
Motorhomes/Travel trailers.
Roadside Assistance/Towing This coverage provides towing to the nearest qualified repair facility and necessary labor at the time and place of disablement when the unit is disabled due to:
- mechanical or electrical breakdown, dead battery, flat tire, lockout, insufficient supply of fuel, oil, water or other fluids, or entrapment in snow, mud, water or sand so long as it is within 100 feet of the roadway.
Vacation Liability This coverage pays up to specified limits for personal liability for which the policyholder is legally liable as a result of an accident that occurs while the Motorhome is used as a temporary vacation quarters.
Emergency Vacation Expense This coverage is important if the unit becomes inoperable due to a covered loss more than 50 miles from home. It typically provides coverage for reasonable temporary living facilities, transportation, and the cost of returning the unit. A covered loss is either a Comprehensive or Collision loss. This coverage is limited and will typically range from $500 to $1,000.
Boats and Personal Watercraft
Replacement cost coverage for new units. This is a specialty coverage but it is one that can be very valuable to owners of new boats. In the event of a total loss, this coverage replaces the current boat with a new boat that is, to the extent possible, the same make and model, and which contains comparable equipment. If the boat is not available, then a comparable model will be substituted for boats five model years old or less. For boats over five years old the company will pay the base value stated on the policy. It is important to remember that replacement of the unit is required if the replacement value is to be used in the loss settlement.
Medical Payments This coverage pays for injury to a covered person while in the boat, riding a personal watercraft or water-skiing. No deductible applies to this coverage.
Extra equipment/accessory coverage With all the options that can be added to watercraft this coverage is extremely valuable for those items that were added to the base value of the unit at the time of manufacture. Some of the more common items to be added as accessories include radios or other communication type equipment, depth finders, down riggers, additional trolling motors as well as numerous other items.
Motorcycle/ATV
Custom parts and equipment This coverage is applicable to equipment, devices, accessories, enhancements and changes other than those which are original manufacturer installed, which alter the appearance or performance of the unit. This includes:
- Electronic equipment such as radios or communication devices which are permanently installed on the unit.
- Sidecars
- Trailers designed to be pulled behind the unit.
- Custom paint or chrome.
- Safety riding apparel, including helmets-these items will only be covered for a collision loss as theft is not included.
- Roadside Assistance/Towing. This coverage provides towing to the nearest qualified repair facility and necessary labor at the time and place of disablement when the unit is disabled due to: mechanical or electrical breakdown, dead battery, flat tire, lockout, insufficient supply of fuel, oil, water or other fluids, or entrapment in snow, mud, water or sand so long as it is within 100 feet of the roadway.
